April 2003

Cymraeg

Jenny Ogwen is one S4C's weather presenters. She has been involved in a variety of television work since the 1960s, including secretarial work, acting, continuity and presenting programmes. Recently, she has become one of the voices of Radio Acen.fm.

Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Llandybie, Carmarthenshire. When I was 2, the family moved to Crymych in Pembrokeshire because Dad had bought a new business. When I was 17, I went to London to learn how to be a secretary.

Have you got a family?
Yes, Euryn my husband, my son Rhodri and my daughter Sara. Euryn, like me, has been in the media since the 1960s. Rhodri works for Sky Sports in London and also for S4C on programmes such as Y Clwb Rygbi and Pacio. Sara, who is mother to 18 month old Soffia, played the part of Catrin Bennett in Pobol y Cwm and, at present, is a member of S4C's presentation team.

Where do you live?
By the sea in Barry - a lovely place.

What are your interests?
Soffia, cooking and playing golf. I love being a grandmother - a young grandmother, naturally! I've just had a new cooker and so I'm enjoying making little cakes for Soffia. I like escaping to the golf course to enjoy the fresh air!

You're also involved in charity work.
Yes. I raise money for charities such as Save the Children and the Welsh Bone Marrow Fund.

How about holidays?
Sun and sea for me every time. I've been going to Lanzarote for 10 years; it's a fantastic place!

How did you start in television?
I began as a secretary on the news programme Y Dydd. Since then I've done many things, such as presenting Siôn a Siân and programmes for children. I've also acted in the tv series for Welsh learners, Now You're Talking. And now you can hear my voice on Radio Acen.

Everyone, I'm sure, will know you as the face of the weather on S4C. Do you enjoy the work?
Yes, it's great fun! The weather changes every day, so it's never boring.

And what about the future?
Some radio work perhaps and starting a company to teach young people how to present television programmes. And of course, plenty of time to be with Soffia, play golf and enjoy holidays in the sun!
